Windletter by UPC School - Presentation of the new Master’s in Offshore Wind Energy
We present the new Master's in Offshore Wind Energy from UPC School, a hands-on, multidisciplinary on-site programme with a 100% practical approach, tailored to the real needs of the industry
Hello everyone and welcome to a new issue of Windletter. I'm Sergio Fernández Munguía (@Sergio_FerMun) and here we discuss the latest news in the wind power sector from a different perspective. If you're not subscribed to the newsletter, you can do so here.
Today’s edition is sponsored by UPC School, from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). For Windletter, it’s a real privilege to count on UPC School as the sponsor of this edition, an institution with which we share a passion for knowledge in the wind energy industry.
UPC is launching a new Master’s in Offshore Wind Energy: an in-person, multidisciplinary programme that combines engineering, design, regulation, environmental impact and offshore wind farm operation, all with a 100% practical approach tailored to the real needs of the industry.
Stay with me and I’ll tell you all the details 👇
🌊 Master’s in Offshore Wind Energy – UPC’s new commitment to lead the offshore future
Offshore wind is living a historic moment. According to the Global Offshore Wind Report 2025, the world installed 8 GW of new capacity in 2024 and is expected to reach 34 GW annually by 2030, a fourfold increase from the current pace.
Catalonia wants to play a key role. The regional government has approved PLEMCAT, the new R&D&I Platform for Marine Energies in Catalonia: a full-scale test site to trial floating technologies, with three test zones already awarded (Wheel, X1Wind and HiveWind).
This master’s degree is born precisely in this context, supporting a sector that will need thousands of skilled professionals in the coming years.
It’s honestly the kind of programme I would love to take myself.
📚 A master’s programme designed to cover the entire value chain
The programme covers all key areas of the offshore wind farm lifecycle:
Introduction to Offshore Wind Energy
Meteorology and Measurement Techniques
Wind Turbine Technology
Operation and Control of Wind Turbines with Power Electronics
Aeroelasticity and Hydrodynamics of Offshore Wind Turbines
Foundation Technologies
Wind Farm Design and Optimisation
Logistics and Installation
Grid Connection and Wind Power System Integration
Environmental and Social Assessment of Offshore Wind
Master’s Final Project
The programme comprises 60 ECTS credits and is delivered in person at ETSEIB (Barcelona), with sessions focused on solving real-life case studies.
The structure is designed to follow the full lifecycle of an offshore wind farm, from site and resource assessment to installation, grid connection, operation, maintenance, and environmental evaluation.
🤝 A programme connected to the industry
In addition to the academic faculty from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, with expertise in industrial engineering, civil engineering, marine energy, power electronics, and applied meteorology, the master’s programme includes active professionals from the offshore sector, from companies such as:
Esteyco (offshore engineering and structural design)
RocBenergy (foundations, marine calculations and design)
Youwind (digital tools for offshore wind farm design and optimisation)
And with the collaboration of companies and institutions such as EOLOS, IREC, Sener, Vortex, and X1Wind, which contribute technological insight, data, real-world case studies, and specialised sessions.
This blended approach ensures that the learning experience is aligned with the current demands of the offshore wind value chain, from research to project deployment.
